Tideway vs Bonsai: who holds your money, and what it really costs to leave

Bonsai sits in your payment flow, and that is where the friction shows. On top of the usual 2.9% + 30c, reviewers report a ~1% Bonsai platform fee and held funds, verbatim: "held my funds since October 5th... HORRIBLE timing to release payment," and "I pay nearly $500 a year... and they charged me an additional $300 in transaction fees." Tideway never holds your money and adds no platform fee on top of Stripe. Stripe pays you directly.

The entry-tier trap

Bonsai's pricing is per-user, and the cheapest Basic tier ($9) literally cannot send an invoice, contract, or proposal. Billing only unlocks at Essentials ($19+/user, 3-user minimum). So the headline price is not the price that gets you paid. Tideway's Base ($12, single price, not per-user) includes invoicing and Stripe pay links on day one.

Lock-in

Bonsai's loudest non-fee complaint is auto-renewal: "being charged even after canceling," with refunds only inside a 14-day window. Tideway is built to be easy to leave, export to CSV/PDF, cancel anytime, which is the same property that makes it easy to join.

Where Bonsai is genuinely strong (be honest)

Bonsai has the best capture feature in this set: a one-click "Invoice Unbilled Hours" button, where every time entry is Billed / Unbilled / Non-billable. It is good. The limit is that it still requires you to log the time first, it surfaces hours you captured, not hours you forgot. Tideway's bet is on the half nobody does: the unlogged hour and the un-charged scope change.
